coastal boho girls' room

I get so excited when I get a kids’ room to design since they’re just so much fun! With this particular project, my client wanted a space to upgrade her current toddler’s room into a more “grown up” space that she can share with her younger sister (now that she’s ready for some big-girl upgrades). The space also needed to double as their playroom, which meant that we needed to keep in mind a layout that maximized the space and incorporate lots of storage. Another important piece to this project was knowing that this wasn’t their forever home — so it came down to figuring out where it made sense to “splurge” a bit more and where it made sense to “save” when factoring in longer-term living situations.

The walls in this space were painted a light-blue when we started the project (which could still work with this design); however, I recommended repainting with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove for a fresh, clean look. This client is located on a beach island (what a life!) so wallpaper was out of the question given the humidity levels they experience there. When in doubt, and especially in a kids space, I always recommend starting with neutral walls and allowing for the decor, toys and books to add all the color!

When it comes to kids storage, my all-time favorite will always be the cube shelf. It’s such a versatile piece that can work in bedrooms, playrooms, even offices. And you can switch up the baskets and bins to make them more conducive to each of those spaces as well. Since the girls’ clothes were all corralled in the closet, we could treat this piece like a dresser and place in between the twin beds (more affordable option found here) with lamps and decor on top and a fun feature wall with hanging straw hats and fans for an interactive but beautiful display.

This space had a ceiling fan that wasn’t getting much use so I decided to replace with this beautiful capiz chandelier to dress it up and add some texture. I also loved these plug-in sconces we added over each bed as reading lights for story time.

The area rug is really what sets the tone as far as color palette and overall style goes in this space — we tied it in with the bedding, curtains and wall decor for a look that feels young and sophisticated at the same time. It all comes down to having fun with mixing patterns and different shades within the same color family!
